Lumberjacks Take on TCU

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will try to win its road opener for the second straight season Tuesday, when the Lumberjacks (1-0) travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on TCU. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. SFA opened the 2005-06 season with an 82-72 victory at Tulsa. The Lumberjacks started the 2006-07 season Saturday with a 71-62 win at home against San Diego.
Last Game: The Lumberjacks got their season out to a strong start Saturday, collecting a 71-62 home win over San Diego. SFA's outside game -- at both ends of the floor -- proved to be the difference in the contest. The Lumberjacks shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from 3-point range, while holding the Toreros to a 1-for-13 (7.7 percent) showing from beyond the arc. San Diego didn't convert any of its seven second-half attempts from 3-point range. Josh Alexander hit 3-of-5 shots from long range to lead SFA with 18 points. Three other players reached double digits in scoring, including Chaz Dykes, who fell one point shy of his career-best with 15 points. Senior center Antuane Miller led SFA in rebounding with eight, and sophomore center Matt Kingsley pulled down seven boards. Both players scored 11 points.
vs. TCU: The Lumberjacks are 3-1 all-time against TCU. SFA won the first three meetings, starting with the first game in the series in 1937. The Horned Frogs knocked off SFA, 84-62, in the teams' last meeting in 2003. Before that game, the teams had not met since SFA's 47-36 win at TCU in 1948.
The Horned Frogs: TCU is looking to rebound from a 6-25 record in 2005-06. The Horned Frogs (1-0) got out to a good start in that endeavor on Saturday, when they opened their season with a 72-66 home win over Centenary. Five TCU players reached double figures in scoring in that contest.
The Coaches: Danny Kaspar is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at SFA. Kaspar is 94-76 (.553) in his time with the Lumberjacks. He is 313-128 (.710) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. TCU is coached by Neil Dougherty. Dougherty is 50-75 (.400) in his fifth season with the Horned Frogs.
Up Next: The Lumberjacks will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the Razorbacks on Saturday. The game, originally scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., has been moved to 7 p.m. to accomodate the broadcast of Arkansas' football game.
