FRISCO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team garnered two first-team all-conference selections and a second straight Newcomer of the Year award on the All-SLC teams, announced Wednesday by league officials. Sophomores Amanda Alders and Lauren Fricks were each named to the All-SLC First Team, and Fricks, a transfer from Texas Tech, earned Newcomer of the Year honors. Ladyjack senior Shahin Pabani got a second-team nod, and freshmen Jessica Huggins, Kelli Wilson and Jenna Turner were each named honorable mention.
For the second straight season, Alders finished the year as the conference leader in both goals and points. The Colleyville, Texas, native scored 11 goals, two more than the next-best total, despite playing in one game fewer. Including her three assists, Alders finished with 25 points. She scored five goals in the Ladyjacks' final three games, including her second career hat trick in a three-goal, two-assist performance against Nicholls State. Last year, Alders was a first-team all-conference and Freshman of the Year selection when she scored a conference-best 15 goals and led the league with 33 points.
Fricks put together an impressive campaign in her debut season as a Ladyjack. She is second on the team and fifth in the SLC with seven goals, and is tied for the team lead and ninth among conference players with four assists. Her 18 points rank second to Alders and fourth in the league. Fricks, who hails from Mansfield, Texas, opened the season strong with two assists in her first game, a 3-2 win over Centenary College. Her goal-scoring enjoyed a similar surge at the end of the season. She posted a hat trick with three goals against Nicholls State on Oct. 22, and followed that up with another multi-goal game, this time scoring twice in SFA's 4-2 win over Texas State in the season finale.
Pabani is making her second appearance on the All-SLC list. She was a first-team selection in 2004 when she posted a school-record 36 points and tied an SFA mark with 15 goals. This season, Pabani finished third among Ladyjacks with six goals, good enough to tie for seventh in the conference. She also tied for the team lead in assists with four. Earlier this season, Pabani took over first place on the SFA records list for career points. She has amassed 29 career goals and 11 assists for 69 total points in her four seasons as a Ladyjack. With two more goals in this weekend's Southland Conference Tournament, Pabani could move into first place on the career goals list. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native ranks second all-time in career assists.
Turner and Huggins earned honorable mention on this year's squads for their roles in the Ladyjack defense. Turner, a redshirt freshman from Round Rock, Texas, has started 15 games for the Ladyjacks this season and been part of a defensive effort that has held opponents to a 1.55 goals against average and posted three shutouts. She is also credited with two assists. Huggins, a rookie from Frisco, Texas, made 16 starts in the SFA backfield. She scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout against Northwestern State and assisted on a goal against Nicholls State. Wilson, a freshman from Plano, Texas, played in all 17 games for the Ladyjacks this season, earning nine starts. She scored a goal and assisted on two others to finish with four points for the year. Her best game came against Grambling State, when she tallied a goal and an assist.
