NACOGDOCHES - As the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball fall schedule comes to a close, head coach Donnie Watson will honor his team for its hard work during the off season with a dinner and an awards presentation Friday evening in the UC Twilight Ballroom at 6:30.
The fall season saw the 'Jacks battling each other in intrasqad games concluding with the Purple/Grey World Series with the Grey team taking the Series, three games to one.
"Our guys have worked so hard this fall that I thought it would be a good idea to recognize them for their efforts," said Watson. "We'll hand out a number of awards to recognize our players."
The awards ceremony will mark the first opportunity to recognize a Lumberjack baseball team since the sport was dropped in 1995. SFA survived its inaugural season making vast improvement during the last month of the 2006 season going 9-3, including a win over No.10 Houston and sweeping Sam Houston State to close the season.
The improvement continues as the sophomore season looms. "Maturity and experience have to be earned, and we have grown up as a team and as a program," said Watson. "With the returning class and a talented group of newcomers, we have a much improved team.
"We are pitching better, our offense is much improved and, with a solid defensive cast, the team is looking ahead for a successful sophomore campaign."
