NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team wraps up the 2006 regular season Saturday when it hosts Texas State on Senior Day. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start and has big implications for the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament. Both teams have already assured themselves of a spot in the tournament, but Friday's outcome could shuffle the seeding a bit. Currently, the Ladyjacks (8-7-1, 4-2-1) are third in the league. A win Friday would guarantee at least the No. 3 seed, while a loss would allow Texas State to leapfrog SFA in the tournament seeding.
Last Week: The Ladyjacks played host to Nicholls State on Sunday, following the cancellation of Tuesday's game against LSU-Shreveport. SFA dominated the Colonels, winning 6-2, as two players -- Amanda Alders and Lauren Fricks -- recorded hat tricks. The Ladyjacks did their damage in three-goal flurries that each lasted fewer than five minutes from start to finish. The loss knocked Nicholls State (4-13-1, 1-6-0) out of tournament contention.
The Opponent: Texas State is 5-11-2 overall and 3-2-2 in Southland Conference action coming into Friday's showdown. The Bobcats are coming off a 1-0 overtime win against Northwestern State Sunday. Texas State creates plenty of scoring chances for itself, as the Bobcats rank second in the SLC in shots and third in corner kicks. The Bobcats are fifth in goals scored with 29, one ahead of SFA. They rank third in the conference in saves.
SFA vs. the Bobcats: The Ladyjacks are 4-8-2 (.357) all-time against Texas State. SFA has yet to defeat the Bobcats in San Marcos, but is 3-1-2 against Texas State at home, including last year's 2-1 victory. Neither team has won consecutive contests in the series since Texas State took three straight in 2001 and 2002.
The Coaches: SFA is coached by second-year head coach Jaime Frias. Frias is 22-11-1 as Ladyjack head coach. Texas State is coached by Kat Conner.
Next Week: The six-team Southland Conference Tournament begins next Thursday in San Marcos. First-round games will be played Thursday with the semifinals set for Friday and the championship game scheduled for Sunday.
