Lumberjacks to Meet Lions

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will look for its first Southland Conference victory when it takes on Southeastern Louisiana Saturday. The game is scheduled to tip off in the University Center in Hammond, La. at 7 p.m. The contest continues a conference-opening Louisiana road swing that began Thursday against Nicholls State.
LAST GAME: The Lumberjacks dropped their second consecutive game, losing to Nicholls State, 77-71, Thursday. The loss moved SFA to 7-4 on the season and 0-1 in Southland Conference play. After trailing for most of the game, the Lumberjacks led briefly in the second half and held a one-point lead (64-63) as late as the 5:20 mark. But Nicholls State went on an 11-2 run and iced the game with some late free throws.
VS. SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA: The Lumberjacks hold an 18-11 lead in the all-time series against Southeastern Louisiana. SFA has won six of the last 10 meetings between the two teams, but the Lions have had the upper hand recently. SLU has won each of the last three meetings, including a season sweep of last year's games.
THE LIONS: Southeastern Louisiana comes into Saturday's game with a 7-5 record. The Lions are 6-1 at home in the University Center this season. SLU has won its last two contests, including a 72-68 win over Texas-San Antonio in Thursday's Southland Conference opener.
THE COACHES: Danny Kaspar is in his sixth season as head coach of the Lumberjacks. Including a nine-year stint as head coach at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Kaspar is 302-120 (.716) over his 14-year coaching career. Kaspar has guided the Lumberjacks to an 83-68 (.550) mark during his tenure. Southeastern Louisiana head coach Jim Yarbrough is in his first season leading the Lions. He entered this campaign with a five-year coaching record of 97-42 (698).
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks will return to the William R. Johnson Coliseum for two Southland Conference games next week, starting with Lamar on Thursday, Jan. 12.
