SFA Has Strong Showing at Hilton Memorial

HOUSTON - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the 2006 indoor season Friday at the Leonard Hilton Memorial. The Ladyjacks were led by a strong showing in the vertical jumps, while the Lumberjacks dominated the sprint events.
The SFA women placed two athletes in the points in both the high jump and the pole vault. Sophomore Audrey Azu led the way with her second-place finish in the high jump. Azu cleared a height of 5-08.00 to take silver. Sophomre Meghan Denman cleared 5-04.25 to take fifth place, and junior Leah Matthews just missed scoring with her ninth-place height of 5-02.25. Freshman Ashley Dickeson cleared 11-05.75 to finish fifth in the pole vault in her first collegiate competition. Sophomore Kristina Windham finished right behind her with a height of 10-11.75.
Junior LaKoa McKeever was fifth in the mile run with a time of 5:12.05. Sophomore Katrina Roundtree scored a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash with her time of 58.17. Matthews placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.73.
Two Ladyjacks turned in scoring performances in the throws. Junior LaQuisha Houston took eighth place in the shot put with her throw of 40-02.25, and she just missed scoring in the weight throw with a ninth-place mark of 43-02.50. Senior Colleen Lonergan finished with a throw of 45-05.75 to take seventh in the weight throw.
On the men's side, SFA dominated the 200-meter dash, picking up points from three runners. Sophomore Stephon Rhea took silver with his time of 22.30, Alex Harris (22.57) was fourth, and Erik Powell (22.79) finished sixth. Rhea also finished sixth in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 6.84. Powell turned in a third-place finish in the 400 meters with his time of 49.80.
The Lumberjacks picked up points in a pair of distance events. Sophomore Gerardo Moreno earned fifth-place honors in the 5,000-meter run with his time of 16:30.95, and senior Chance Edwards ran a 4:22.13 to finish eighth in the mile.
Sophomore Justin Reyes was eighth in the high jump with a height of 6-05.50, and freshman Chayden Feist just missed scoring with his ninth-place height of 15-01.00 in the pole vault.
In the throws, senior Scott Reid led the way with his fifth-place finish in the weight throw. Reid's best distance was 49-07.75. Junior James Williams scored in the shot put with his eighth-place throw of 49-10.50.
The SFA track and field program will return to action on Jan. 27, when the teams head to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational.
