NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack cross country team will compete in its first 8K race of the season Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m. on the A&M Intramural Fields, just west of the Frank G. Anderson Track and Field Complex.
The Lumberjacks are coming off a strong showing at last weekend's Lumberjack Opener. SFA runners, led by the team of junior Chance Edwards and freshman Aaron Hohn, who won the men's race with a time of 39:45.37, took three of the top five spots in the non-scoring relay event.
"I was very happy with last week," SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling said. "We got exactly what we wanted to out of that experience. We wanted to go in and race in a specific manner, in terms of pacing, and we did that almost perfectly."
Saturday, the Lumberjacks will be competing against runners from Baylor, Houston, Texas A&M-Prairie View, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-International, Texas Southern, Texas State and Trinity.
"This is our first 8K race experience of the season," Snelling said. "It's very early. We're going to use this as a tune-up for our other meets."
The Lumberjacks have no race scheduled for the following week. The SFA women's team is set to travel to Houston on Saturday, Sept. 17, for the Rice Invitational.
