NACOGDOCHES - In a battle for first place in the Southland Conference standings, it was the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks who kept their perfect SLC record with a win over the Sam Houston State Bearkats in four games Friday night at the Shelton Gymnasium. Both teams were carrying a perfect 4-0 record into the match.
"It was a great win and a great match," said Ladyjacks head coach Debbie Humphreys. "These were two great teams who were just getting after each other," she said.
The Ladyjacks took game one, 30-23, while the Bearkats rallied to take the second game, 30-27. But it was not enough as the Ladyjacks took the next two, 30-28 and 32-30.
Sophomore Traci Rohde led the way for the Ladyjacks as she set her career high in kills with 17. She added two service aces and five total blocks in tonight's match. Freshman Lauren Railey also set a career high with 25 digs. Together with 14 kills, Railey nabbed her sixth double-double of the season.
Senior Jessica Watson collected six total blocks and sophomore JJ Jones grabbed 50 assists.
Both teams had a hitting percentage of below .200 with SFA hitting .172 and SHSU hitting .162. Humphreys said the numbers can be deceiving. "Its not that either team wasn't attacking well, but both teams had such great defense," she said.
The full house at Shelton Gymnasium showed the rivalry between these two East Texas teams. "There is a great rivalry between Sam (Houston State) and SFA and it was great for us to come out on top," said Humphreys.
The win was Humphreys' 390th career victory. The Ladyjacks' 12-2 overall record give her a 390-195 career record.
The Ladyjacks will return to the court on Tuesday, October 4, against Louisiana Tech. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Shelton Gymnasium.
