NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over Grambling Wednesday. All five goals came in the second half, and each one was scored by a different Ladyjack, as SFA improved its season record to 6-3.
Ladyjack junior Alicia Reese opened the scoring with a goal on a direct kick 13 minutes into the second half. That goal seemed to open the flood gates, as SFA poured in two more scores in less than 10 minutes and added a couple more goals late in the match.
Senior defender Kim Gray notched her second goal of the season in the 61st minute. Her goal followed a shot by freshman Amanda Alders that deflected off the post. With the Grambling goalkeeper on the ground, Gray easily found the back of the net.
Alders got a goal of her own barely three minutes later when she dribbled away from a defender in the box and again ricocheted a shot off the post. This time, though, the bounce went her way and found the net, giving the Ladyjacks a 3-0 lead. It was Alders' team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Freshman Amanda Lackey notched the next goal -- her third of the season -- on a penalty kick in the 74th minute, and junior Mary Surkein bent a shot toward the far post and past the Grambling keeper from her spot on the left wing to finish off the SFA scoring. The goal was Sukein's second of the year.
Three different goalkeepers saw action for SFA. Senior Natascia Michalezki started in net, but didn't face a single Grambling shot before giving way to freshman Fran Tierno in the 31st minute. Tierno stayed on until after Reese's goal, earning the win, and junior Vanessa Callaway logged 29 minutes and recorded two saves.
The Ladyjacks were originally scheduled to meet Northwestern State in a road match on Sunday. That contest has been tentatively canceled with a home match Friday against TCU penciled in instead, pending approval by school officials. Visit www.sfajacks.com for updates.
