NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country teams began the 2005 season Friday with the Lumberjack Opener, a relay meet held at Pecan Park. Lumberjack runners came away with three of the top five finishing times, and the Ladyjacks nabbed first- and third-place honors in the women's race.
The team of junior Chance Edwards and freshman Aaron Hohn combined for a time of 39:45.37 to win the men's race by less than a second. Freshman Gerardo Moreno, who teamed with junior Cody Clark, chased them in just a second later with a combined time of 39:46.87 to finish third. Sophomore Robert Smith and junior Daniel Williams crossed the line fifth with a time of 40:01.93.
In the women's race, junior duo of Kimbri Lettkeman and Ashley Monteau left the competition far behind with a winning time of 31:02.01. The next-closest team came across nearly 45 seconds later. Sophomores Katrina Nicholas and Kirsten Wieseman finished third with a time of 32:56.35.
SFA senior Julian Acuna and freshman Keith Mahipala took second place in the men's race, running unattached (39:45.78). Senior Marc Farris and freshman Edy Vargas, also running unattached, took sixth with a time of 40:31.76.
In the women's race, unattached entries Heather Adams and Courtney Phillips -- both freshmen -- combined on a time of 33:03.19, good enough for fourth place. Freshmen Brooke Blume and Megan Williams ran unattached and took sixth place with a time of 33:56.78.
Runners from Northwestern State and Midwestern State also competed in the event.
The SFA teams will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 for the Texas A&M Invite in College Station, Texas.
