NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack cross country team will begin its competitive season this weekend in Houston. The Ladyjacks are scheduled to run in the 31st annual Rice Invitational Saturday.
The Rice Invitational will be the Ladyjacks' first competitive scoring meet of the season. The race will cover a 4,000-meter course and is set to start at 8:20 a.m. on the Rice intramural fields. SFA kicked off its season two weeks ago with the Lumberjack Opener, a non-scoring relay meet.
"We've had two weeks since our last competition," SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling said. "That's the cycle our women's team will be in for the remainder of the year. It allows us to get some solid training in between meets."
Snelling said some of his Ladyjack runners are currently reaping the rewards of their solid training between the spring and fall semesters.
"We've got a lot of returnees that are very fit right now and are playing a bigger role than I expected them to," the coach said. "Kimbri Lettkeman and Katrina Nicholas are really looking good. They had a good summer, and they're in good shape right now."
Lettkeman is a junior, and Nicholas is a sophomore. Snelling said only returning runners will compete in scoring positions at Rice. Freshmen and transfers will run unattached.
