SFA Records Five Regional Marks in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team competed at the Houston Invitational Saturday afternoon, and the team came away with five NCAA regional marks and a school record in its last meet before the Southland Conference Championships.
Junior Kenneth McKinley won the men's shot put and recorded an NCAA regional qualifying mark with his throw of 58-2.50. Freshman Johnny Thacker recorded a NCAA regional mark in the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.50, to finish second overall in the event. He was the top collegiate finisher at the event. Sophomore Wade Whittington finished second in the javelin with his NCAA regional qualifying throw of 208-7.
Thacker also had a strong showing in the 200-meter dash, recording the fastest collegiate time in that event as well. Thacker finished third overall, crossing the finish line with a time of 21.48. Sophomore Darwin Johnson finished fifth in the hammer throw with his throw of 164-8. The Ladyjacks were led by sophomore
Sarah Emerson who recorded a school record and a regional qualifying mark in the javelin. She finished third overall with her throw of 161-2. Sophomore Markeisha Edwards recorded the squad's fifth regional mark in the shot put, finishing second overall with a throw of 47-3.00.
Other Ladyjacks that had a strong outing included sophomore Leah Matthews who finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.21. Freshman Katrina Roundtree was second overall in the 400 meters with her time of 56.72. Junior Stevina Wyatt finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.43) and 400-meter hurdles (1:02.02) while senior Jocelyn Stevens finished third in the 400 hurdles crossing the finish line with a time of 1:01.05. Senior Teresa Murray finished fourth in the high jump, just edging out teammate Audrey Azu who cleared a height of 5-7.00. Freshman Kristina Windham was fourth in the pole vault as she cleared a height of 11-5.75. Sophomore LaQuisha Houston finished fourth in the discus (142-11) and shot put (43-5.25), while teammate Colleen Lonergan finished fourth in the hammer with her throw of 143-11.
SFA returns to action Friday when it travels to Huntsville, Texas to compete in the Southland Conference Championships. The championship meet is a three-day event that will last through Sunday.
