NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach Danny Kaspar has announced the signing of Chaz Dykes to a letter of intent to play basketball and continue his education at the university next fall. Dykes spent the past two seasons at Navarro Junior College and will join the Lumberjacks for the 2005-06 season.
"Chaz is going to be a very successful player for us. He plays with great intensity and heart. His love for the game is very obvious to me. He can score, rebound, defend and pass and I'm really looking forward to coaching him. Chaz is a complete player," said Kaspar.
A 2003 graduate of George W. Carver High School in New Orleans, La., Dykes is a 6-4 guard who earned third team All-Conference honors last season in the Texas Eastern Conference and was also a First Team All-Tournament Team selection at the TEC state tournament earlier this spring.
Dykes averaged 15 points and five rebounds per game as a sophomore for coach Lewis Orr last season at Navarro while shooting just over 51-percent from the field. He was also a 45-percent three-point shooter his sophomore season at Navarro and scored a season high 23 points against nationally ranked Lon Morris earlier this spring.
The 6-4 wing player was the Louisiana Class 4A Player of the Year as a junior and led his team to Carver High School's first ever state championship. He was also an all-district, all-city and all-state selection as a senior at Carver High School for coach Brian Simmons. Dykes is the son of Alece Clay and will enroll at the university in the fall. ™
