NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach Danny Kaspar has announced the signing of DeAndre Mays to a letter of intent to play basketball and continue his education at the university next fall. The 6-1, 178-pound guard from Dallas Samuell High School will join the Lumberjacks for the fall semester.
Mays was a two-time team MVP for coach Darius Brown at W. W. Samuell High School in Dallas and also earned MVP honors in the DFW/Tarrant County All-Star game. He was a first team all-district 9-5A selection and was also the offensive player of the year as a senior. He averaged just under 18 points per game and added five rebounds per game during his high school career. Mays was also a first team all-district selection as a junior and was also voted the Newcomer of the Year in district 10-5A as a junior.
"I am very excited about DeAndre's potential as a Lumberjack. DeAndre can play either guard position and has shown a lot of leadership in the past year in leading his team to the playoffs. I think his best basketball is yet to come," said Kaspar.
A member of the National Honor Society and named to Who's Who Among American High School Students, Mays will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Lumberjacks.
