
Jacks finish second, Ladyjacks third at SLC Meet

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team finished the third and final day of competition at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships Sunday in Huntsville, Texas. The `Jacks scored 126.50 points to finish second overall, while the Ladyjacks were third overall with a score of 125 points.
The Ladyjacks were led by senior Ana Rodriguez and sophomore Ashley Monteau Sunday afternoon as the tandem went 1-2 in the women's 5,000-meter run. Rodriguez won the race with her time of 17:19.27. Monteau was the SLC runner-up as she crossed the finish line second with a time of 17:20.06. Senior Jocelyn Stevens earned all-conference honors in the 400-meter hurdles for a third consecutive season, finishing third overall and setting a new SFA record with her time of 59.85. Stevens just beat out teammate Stevina Wyatt for All-SLC honors, as she finished fourth in the event (1:00.18). Both Stevens and Wyatt set NCAA regional marks in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Laure Mikeska earned all-league honors in the pole vault when she cleared a height of 11-5.75. The Ladyjacks 4X400-meter relay team of Wyatt, Stevens, freshmen Katrina Roundtree and Ashley Mangum earned all-conference honors as they finished third with a time of 3:42.44.
Junior Chance Edwards led the SFA men by winning the 1,500 meters and setting a new school record with his time of 3:49.16. Junior Kenneth McKinley earned his second all-conference honor of the meet finishing third in the discus with his throw 165-6. Freshman Johnny Thacker was the third Lumberjack to earn All-Southland Conference honors on Sunday as he finished third in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 20.95.
Other Ladyjacks that scored on the third and final day of competition were freshman Kristina Windham who cleared a height of 11-5.75 to finish sixth in the pole vault. Sophomore LaKoa McKeever finished fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:43.66), while freshman Savannah Matzinger was eight in the event only six seconds back of McKeever. Roundtree was sixth in the 400-meter dash with her time of 55.41.
Sophomore Darwin Johnson also had a strong outing for SFA on Sunday finishing fifth in the discus with a throw of 164-1. Freshman Geoffrey Carey finished tied for sixth in the pole vault after clearing a height of 15-7.00. The `Jacks 4X100-meter relay team finished fourth, just missing all-conference honors with a time of 40.43. Freshman Cole Hollingsworth finished seventh in the 1,500 meters clocking a time of 3:57.29. Sophomore Reggie Lazenby just missed All-SLC honors in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 14.40. Senior Jonathan James finished sixth in the event with his time of 14.70. Thacker just missed earning all-conference honors in his second event of the day as he finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 10.75. Freshman Tedla Fanta was fifth in the 5,000 meters (15:01.08), while sophomore Cody Clark finished eighth in the event with a time of 15:07.89. The 4X100-meter relay team just missed a school record but did qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships in two weeks.
SFA returns to action Friday May 27 through Saturday May 28 when it travels to Norman, Okla., to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships.
