HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team kicked off the 2005 outdoor track and field season Friday afternoon with a strong showing at the York Relays in Huntsville, Texas. SFA brought home five individual titles, two NCAA regional qualifying marks and one SFA record at the meet.
Sophomore Darwin Johnson set a new school record in the hammer throw, winning the event with a mark of 156-5.00. Sophomore Sarah Emerson followed that up with an NCAA regional mark of 147-2.00 in the javelin to finish second overall. Classmate Markeisha Edwards added an NCAA regional qualifying mark in the shot put with her toss of 47.6.50. Edwards throw was good enough to win the event.
Junior Kenneth McKinley won the shot put with his throw of 52-10.25. McKinley edged out sophomore James Williams who finished second with a throw of 49-9.25. Johnson finished fourth in the event with a mark of 47-8.00. The Ladyjacks Jocelyn Stevens won the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 1:02.21. Stevens just missed winning a second individual title in the high jump, finishing second to classmate Teresa Murray. Both athletes cleared a height of 5-7.00, but Murray won the event based on the tie-breaker.
The SFA men and women's team returns to action Friday Mar. 25, when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Tiger Relays and Multi Events.
