NACOGDOCHES -- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team (3-3) evened its record Friday night with a sweep of Texas Southern (0-2) in the home opener for the Ladyjacks. SFA exploded for 25 hits in the two games and scored a combined 28 runs while Ladyjack pitching scattered six hits to the Tigers.
Lee Lara helped SFa break open the first game with a three run home run in the bottom of the third inning as the Ladyjacks scored five runs in the inning on three hits. Lara's homer came with two on an two out and followed a run scoring triple off the bat of Nicole Carter which started the scoring in the third. Lara's blast to left center made it 6-0 nothing SFA and gave Nicole Carter (1-2) all the support she would need.
Carter worked 3.0 innings and allowed only two hits while striking out two batters. Kaitlin Morrison came on to work two innings and did not allow a run on three hits.
SFA continued the offensive output in game two, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning on only one hit. SFA took advantage of four walks and a hit batter to open the inning and also benefited from one Texas Southern error.
Lara also tripled home a run in game two in the bottom of the second as SFA added three more runs before icing the game with another six run inning in the third.
Kristen Gabourie went 2-3 with four RBI in game two, including a two-run home run in the fourth. SFA pounded out 17 hits in game two in scoring 20 runs.
Julie Morse and Traci Moore combined for a one-hit shutout of Texas Southern in the nightcap. Morse (2-1) picked up the win while going 3.0 innings and allowing one hit. Moore worked two hitless innings of relief on the night.
SFA returns to action Feb. 16, on the road, against Texas A&M. Game time for game one of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.
