`Jacks Fall in Close Game at North Texas

DENTON, Texas - DENTON, Texas - Despite a game-high 23 points from senior Marcus Clark and 20 points and seven rebounds from freshman Josh Alexander, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team dropped an 81-75 decision to North Texas Friday night in Denton. The setback dropped SFA to 7-3 (.700) on the season.
The Lumberjacks were 24-of-61 (39 percent) from the floor and neutralized North Texas on the glass with 37 rebounds, but SFA couldn't slow down the UNT offense, which shot 34-of-62 (55 percent) from the field, despite hitting only 1-of-14 three-point field-goal attempts. The Eagles also gained a huge advantage in the low post, outscoring SFA, 54-32 in the paint.
Senior Anthony Paez scored 16 points, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists, but the `Jacks received little offensive help from the rest of the team. Clark, Alexander and Paez, combined for 59 points, while the rest of the team accounted for only 16.
The Lumberjacks return to action Thursday when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to open Southland Conference action against Nicholls State. The game against the Colonels is slated to tip off at 6:30 p.m., from Stopher Gym.
