TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Stephen F. Austin's Ashley Monteau wrapped up her cross country season Monday by competing at the NCAA Championships. Monteau placed 90th out of 253 runners with a time of 21:02 on the 6,000-meter course.
The national championship showing wraps up a season that saw Monteau win three of the six races she competed in. She won the Southland Conference Championship for the second year in a row and finished fourth at the NCAA South Central Regionals to qualify for the national meet.
"It's a great way to end a great year for Ashley and for our women's program," SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling said. "It's always good to toe the line at the national championships."
Monteau was competing in her second consecutive NCAA Championship race. Last year, as a sophomore, she finished 75th overall, despite running 40 seconds slower than she did on Monday, when an unusually fast pace led to a new record being set.
"It was just a very fast race today," Snelling said. "It was a great experience for her to have. When she comes back next year, she'll be ready for whatever comes her way."
