SULPHUR, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team wrapped up its regular season Saturday with a perfect 19-0 Southland Conference record when it defeated McNeese State, 3-1, in Sulphur, La. This is the first undefeated season for an SLC school since Texas State went 20-0 in 2000.
The Cowgirls battled the Ladyjacks in game one as SFA escaped with a 32-30 win and won an easier game two, 30-22. McNeese State fought back and nabbed a 30-28 game three victory. However, the Ladyjacks did not let their undefeated season slip away as they took game four, 30-23.
It was a career night for sophomore JJ Jones who nabbed a triple-double, a career first for Jones and a Ladyjack first this season. It was also the first Ladyjack triple-double since Brittany Burton recorded the feat during the 2003 season. She matched her career-high kills with 10 and collected 55 assists and 13 digs. She also had a match high .529 hitting percentage and put up three total blocks.
Jones was just one of five Ladyjacks who collected double-digit kills. Freshman Lauren Railey led the match with 19 kills as junior Laura Cramer recorded 17. Sophomore Traci Rohde and senior Lauren Stevens knocked down 11 and 12, respectively. Cramer's 14 digs earned her 18th double-double of the 2005 season. Freshman Ashley Bailey led the Ladyjacks with five total blocks, including one solo.
SFA finishes off the season on a 20-match win streak and a 27-2 overall record and is the second team at SFA this season to finish out their SLC schedule undefeated. SFA's women's soccer team finished its regular season, 10-0.
The Southland Conference champion Ladyjacks will return to the court on Friday night in the SLC Championship Tournament at Texas-Arlington. SFA goes into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face the No. 8 seed at 7:30 p.m. in Texas Hall.
