NACOGDOCHES, Texas - With the Southland Conference Championships behind them, the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country teams will turn their attention toward the NCAA regionals this weekend. The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks are set to compete in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships, scheduled for Saturday at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas.
SFA is coming off a successful performance in last week's SLC Championships. The Lumberjacks won their fifth consecutive team title, and the Ladyjacks finished second. Each team also posted an individual champion with Cody Clark winning the men's title and Ashley Monteau taking home the women's crown for the second straight year.
Monteau, a junior from Anahuac, Texas, has won three individual titles this season. She finished 11th at the regional meet last season and advanced to the NCAA National Championships. Cross country coach Lou Snelling said a similar performance this season would not surprise him.
"It's tough to find many girls in the region that are on her level right now," Snelling said. "There are only a handful."
The Lumberjacks are heading back to the regional meet a year after finishing fifth in the event .
"On the guys' side, this is going to be a great opportunity for a lot of our young runners to get some good experience," Snelling said.
The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's race on a course that will cover 10,000 meters. The women's 6,000-meter race is set to start at 11:15 a.m.
