PLANO, Texas - The Southland Conference Champion Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team had six players selected to the 2005 All-SLC squads and took three of four superlative honors, according to a release from conference officials on Tuesday. Forward Amanda Alders was named Freshman of the Year, defender Camren Norris was named Newcomer of the Year, and head coach Jaime Frias took Coach of the Year honors. The Ladyjacks also landed three spots each on the first- and second-team all-conference squads.
Alders, who finished the regular season as the conference's leading scorer with 15 goals, was the only freshman named first-team All-SLC. The forward posted an amazing rookie campaign, tying the school record for goals in a season. She scored at least one goal in each of the Ladyjacks' last 11 contests, all wins.
Joining Alders on the first team were seniors and co-captains Kim Gray and Natascia Michalezki. The two experienced players led a defensive unit that allowed just 11 goals and posted 11 shutouts this season, both tops in the league. The 11 shutouts are a school record. Gray, a defender, also scored five goals and added one assist in earning the fourth all-conference nod of her career. She was a second-team selection as a junior and a first-team player in each of the last three seasons. Michalezki is also making her fourth appearance on the All-SLC team. The goalkeeper was a second-team selection in each of her first two seasons and took first-team honors as a junior. Michalezki's 0.74 goals against average and .880 save percentage both lead the conference this season. She posted a 12-3 record with nine shutouts this year.
Norris, a senior, was named to the second-team list, along with freshmen Megan Spitzmueller and Amanda Lackey. Norris, in her first full year with the Ladyjack program after transferring from the Naval Academy, scored one goal this season and teamed with Gray and Michalezki in leading the best defensive team in the Southland Conference. Spitzmueller and Lackey, both midfielders, helped give SFA some offensive punch. Lackey finished the regular season second on the team in goals with six and added three assists. Spitzmueller compiled two goals and an assist.
Frias was named Coach of the Year for leading the Ladyjacks to a 14-3 record and a 7-0 conference mark in his first season as the program's head coach. The Ladyjacks are on a school-record 11-match winning streak, heading into this weekend's SLC Tournament in Natchitoches, La. SFA is the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament and will begin play Friday at 4:30 p.m.
