THIBODAUX, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team cruised past Nicholls State, 5-0, to improve its Southland Conference record to 3-0 and run its current win streak to six matches. The Ladyjacks have not lost since their Sept. 11 contest at Houston.
Four different SFA players scored goals, with freshman Amanda Alders adding two scores to her team-leading total, and senior goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki notched two saves in recording her sixth shutout of the year.
"I think our girls did a really good job of focusing," SFA head coach Jaime Frias said. "I'm proud of the effort that they put out for all 90 minutes. They didn't let up."
SFA got on the board with only seconds left in the first half, when senior Kim Gray scored with an assist by Lauren Cummings.
The Ladyjacks were back on the attack quickly after halftime. This time Gray assisted on a goal by sophomore Stephanie Prentice, only 1:14 into the second half.
The Ladyjacks held onto their 2-0 lead until the 70th minute when Alders scored the first of her two goals. She would add the second one just three minutes later. Classmate Amanda Lackey assisted on both goals, and knocked home the final SFA score unassisted in the 79th minute.
Alders has now scored a team-high 10 goals for the year. Lackey's total of five ranks second.
Michalezki recorded a save in each half, as she improved her record to 8-3 and moved her season save total to 60. Nicholls State only managed three shots the entire contest.
"The defense has been solid the whole weekend," Frias said. "Obviously we worked on defending this week. It's nice as a coach to see the fruits of your training sessions in two quality shutouts against conference opponents."
The Ladyjacks (9-3, 3-0) will host Sam Houston on Friday. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start at the SFA Intramural Complex.
