NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack cross country team will run in its first competitive meet in nearly a month Saturday, when the team travels to Alabama for the Auburn Invitational. Because of schedule changes caused by Hurricane Rita, the Lumberjacks' last meet was the Sept. 10 Texas A&M Invitational, where they finished second.
After having their trip to the Great American Cross Country Festival in North Carolina canceled two weeks ago, the Lumberjacks ran at last weekend's Northwestern State Invitational, but used the meet more as a workout than a race. SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling said his team is fresh and itching for a race.
"We're ready to race," the coach said. "We had some big workouts this week, and it will be nice to get these guys out in a race situation again."
SFA will have the chance to run against some prime competition in the 8,000-meter race. A number of Southeastern Conference teams will be in attendance, including Auburn, Alabama, Louisiana State, Mississippi State and South Carolina. Southland Conference foe Lamar will also compete.
"There will be a lot of SEC schools there," Snelling said. "It will be nice to see how we stack up against them. It's a good opportunity for us to go out and run in a bigger meet. We'll have a real nice tune-up before the conference meet."
The SLC championships will be held Oct. 31 in Natchitoches, La.
