NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Six different Ladyjack players got in on the scoring as the Stephen F. Austin soccer team rolled to a 6-1 Southland Conference victory over Sam Houston State Friday at the SFA Intramural Complex. The Ladyjacks bolted out to a quick start with two goals in the first half, then poured it on after halftime with four more scores.
The win improved the Ladyjacks to 10-3 on the season (4-0 in SLC action) and extended their winning streak to seven matches, which equals their best run from last season. Sam Houston fell to 2-10 overall and 2-2 in SLC play.
"I thought our girls played extremely well," SFA head coach Jaime Frias said. "They executed our game plan to the tee. It was a great team effort today -- this was definitely a team win."
The Ladyjacks opened the scoring in the 17th minute when freshman Megan Spitzmueller took a cross from classmate Summer Bradfield and put it past Sam Houston goalkeeper Melissa Sauceda. The goal was Spitzmueller's second of the season.
Sam Houston answered in the 36th minute when Raquel Bueno found the net on a free kick. She launched the shot from just outside the penalty box and angled it into the upper right corner, out of the reach of SFA goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki. The goal tied the score at 1, but not for long.
Ladyjack senior Kim Gray broke the tie three minutes later when she gathered a loose ball in front of the Sam Houston net and drove it home, following a Caitlin O'Brien corner kick. The goal was Gray's fourth of the year and second in as many games.
SFA went to halftime with a 2-1 lead.
The Ladyjacks extended their lead just three minutes into the second half when Alicia Reese sent a shot past the goalkeeper and off both posts before rolling in. It was the junior midfielder's second goal of the season.
Reese's goal opened the flood gates. SFA's leading scorer, freshman Amanda Alders got into the act in the 58th minute when she took possession near the Sam Houston net and slipped a quick shot past Sauceda for her 11th goal of the season. Alders has now recorded at least one goal in each of the Ladyjacks' last seven contests and came into Friday's match as the SLC leader in goals and points.
Sophomore Kristel Lindsey scored her fourth goal of the year in the 73rd minute, with a nice feed from junior Mary Surkein. Senior Lauren Cummings tacked on the final score with nine minutes left, on an assist by Alders.
"We've been working all week on getting numbers in and around the box on our attacks," Frias said. "We did an exceptional job of that today, finding the right player on the cross then finishing it off by getting a head or a body on the ball."
At the other end of the field, Michalezki recorded seven saves, including a couple of tough stops in one-on-one situations early in the contest. The senior goalkeeper now has 67 saves for the season.
The Ladyjacks will be looking for their eighth consecutive victory Sunday, when they head to Shreveport, La. for a non-conference meeting with Centenary. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
"One of our team goals was to win seven of our 10 non-conference games," Frias said. "A win against Centenary would put us at that goal. The girls have that objective in mind. They've been guided all year long by goals. This would be the first one of many for them to accomplish this season."
