Lumberjacks Finish Third at Leonard Hilton

HOUSTON - The Stephen F. Austin men's track and field team kicked-off the 2005 indoor season Friday night at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational with a solid performance. The `Jacks scored 50 points to finish third overall.
Junior Julian Acuna led an impressive showing in the 5,000 meters when he finished second overall (15:21.43) just ahead of teammate Marc Farris. Farris crossed the finish line with a time of 15:30.88. Freshman Johnny Thacker had a solid showing in his first meet as a Lumberjack recording a fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash (6.84) and a third-place finish in the 200-meters (22.22). Senior DeVaughn Rettig also recorded a couple of top-five finishes for SFA. He was second in the triple jump with his jump of 47-11.25 and fifth in the long jump (22-9.25). The `Jacks also had some strong performances from its throws squad. Sophomore Kenneth McKinley finished second in the shot put with his toss of 53-5.50. Sophomore Darwin Johnson and junior Scott Reid competed in a new event to the 2005 season. Johnson recorded a fourth-place finish in the weight throw (51-11.00) while Reid posted a mark of 47-6.25 to finish sixth overall. Johnson's mark establishes the SFA record in the event.
The results for the Ladyjacks were not posted at the time of print.
SFA returns to action Friday Jan. 28, when both the men's and women's squads will travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the Bayou Bengal Invitational.
