NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country teams opened up the 2004 season Monday evening in the Lumberjack Opener at the Piney Woods Country Club. The meet was a non-scoring relay format.
Both teams look strong as the Lumberjacks placed five among the overall top 10 and the Ladyjacks recorded three top-10 finishes. The Ladyjacks duo of 2003 All-Southland Conference selection Jessica Partin and Savannah Matzinger were the top collegiate finishers recording a time of 31:25.86 to finish third overall. They were followed by 2002 All-SLC Emily Hufstedler and Amber Bagwell, who crossed the line with a time of 31:28.42. SFA's Katrina Nicholas and Kirsten Wieseman recorded a time of 32:28.38 to finish seventh overall.
The Lumberjacks were paced by the team of Cody Clark and Rodney Joseph who finished fourth overall with a time of 38:37.75. The Lumberjacks Clifton Tierney and Matt Albertson finished two spots back with a time of 38:41.98. Teammates Chance Edwards and Eric Brill were less than four seconds off that pace to finish seventh overall (38:45.74).
"I'm happy with our performance. We accomplished all of our goals for the meet. Both teams really came out and achieved what I wanted them to in this first meet. We now have an opportunity to get a good base of training before our next meet in two weeks which will prepare us for the end of the season."
SFA returns to action Friday Oct. 1, when it will travels to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the Islander Splash Invitational.
