SFA Dominates 10,000-Meter Run

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams remain in the hunt for the Southland Conference Outdoor title after an impressive second day of competition.
SFA closed out the first day of competition late Saturday night by overwhelming the rest of the conference in the 10,000-meters. Sophomore Julian Acuna outpaced the rest of the field, winning the race with a time of 30:47.97. Acuna's closest competition came from teammate Nathan Flores who finished only four-hundredths of a second off. Sophomore Marc Farris just missed all-conference honors with his fourth-place finish in the event (31:39.09). Sophomore Rodney Joseph (32:01.52) and junior Matt Albertson (32:07.93) rounded out the Lumberjacks stunning performance by finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.
The Ladyjacks turned in just as dominating a performance in the 10,000 meters behind freshman Ashley Monteau's winning time of 36:14.14. Junior Ana Rodriguez finished second with a time of 36:38.81. Junior Emily Hufstedler rounded out the Ladyjacks scoring in the event with her eight-place finish (39:39.61).
Freshman Wade Whittington made a huge statement in his first SLC Championship meet posting a mark of 211-10 to win the individual title, set a new school record and improve his NCAA Regional standing. Senior Paul Todd repeated his accomplishments from the indoor season by winning the high jump (6-10.75). Todd's mark was also an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. Senior DeVaughn Rettig earned All-Southland Conference honors and recorded an NCAA Regional mark with his third-place finish in the long jump. Rettig recorded a jump of 24-1.00. Classmate Alex Beckworth finished fifth with a mark of 23-3.50 in the event.
Sophomore Crystal Chang was the SLC runner-up in the heptathlon with her score of 4,848 points. Junior Lindsey Bryson also scored for SFA in the event with a tally of 4,428 points. Juniors Jocelyn Stevens and Teresa Murray finished in a two-way tie for fifth in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-6.00. SFA will close out the second day of competition with the men and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase Sunday evening at 9:30 and 10 o'clock, respectively. The final day of competition will begin Monday afternoon with the women's discus throw. The track events will get underway at 6 p.m.
