
SFA Men & Women Finish Second at SLCs

SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team wrapped up a successful trip to the 2004 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Monday evening. The Ladyjacks scored 125 points to finish second, while the Lumberjacks finished second overall scoring 155 points.
Junior Ana Rodriguez won the women's 5,000-meters wither her time of 17:11.54, but had to fight off teammate Ashley Monteau who finished second with a time of 17:18.26. Senior Vicky Jannise set a new school-record, an NCAA Regional mark and won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her time of 10:55.06. She also scored two points for SFA in the event with her seventh-place finish (18:32.68). Senior Blake Gordon closed out her final SLC Championship meet by earning all-conference honors in the discus. Gordon recorded an NCAA Regional mark and finished second overall with her throw of 164-01. Classmate Jennifer Schreiner also recorded All-SLC honors with her second-place finish in the pole vault (12-3.50). Sophomore Stevina Wyatt earned all-conference honors in the 100-meter hurdles finishing third with an NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 13.93. Junior Jocelyn Stevens just missed all-conference honors with her fourth-place finish in the event (14.09). But Stevens bounced right back to defend her title in the 400-meter hurdles, recording an NCAA Regional time of 1:00.33. Wyatt scored two points for SFA in the event, finishing seventh with a time of 1:07.98.
Senior Justin Meier led the charge in the 1,500-meter run as SFA continued to dominate in the distance events. Meier won the race with a time of 3:53.20. Sophomore Chance Edwards also earned all-conference honors in the race finishing third overall (3:53.72), while junior Clifton Tierney crossed the finish line fifth (3:56.09). Sophomore Cody Clark (14:40.00) and senior Nathan Flores (14:50.98) earned all-conference honors in the 5,000-meter run finishing second and third, respectively. Sophomore Julian Acuna recorded a fifth-place finish (14:59.90) in the event, just ahead of senior Mike Thompson (15:03.35) and sophomore Marc Farris who were sixth and seventh, respectively. Senior DeVaughn Rettig earned All-Southland Conference honors in the triple jump with his mark of 52-6.75 to finish third overall. Rettig's jump was good enough to qualify him for the NCAA Regional meet. Freshman Darwin Johnson scored two points for SFA in the discus throw with his mark of 160-08. Sophomore Mike Ludlow scored three points in the pole vault when he cleared a height of 14-11.00 to finish sixth overall. Senior Alex Beckworth finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with his NCAA Regional qualifying time of 14.23. Beckworth finished just ahead of teammate Reggie Lazenby (14.35) who posted an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 14.26 in the preliminaries. Harris also recorded a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (21.26) and a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.62).
SFA returns to action Friday May 28th, when they travel to College Station, Texas, to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships.
