Freshman Wade Whittington Wins Javelin

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team wrapped up the second and final day of competition at the Rice Bayou Classic Saturday afternoon. Freshman Wade Whittington led the Lumberjacks effort winning the javelin throw with his mark of 193-06.
The Lumberjacks also had good performances from their sprints squad as freshman Alex Harris finished third in the 200-meter dash with his time of 22.08. The 'Jacks 4X100-meter relay team also came up big on Saturday finishing first with a time of 41.33. Junior Jonathan James was the first of three Lumberjacks to cross the finish line in the 110-meter hurdles, recording a time of 14.67. James finished fifth overall in the event. The Lumberjacks were led sophomore Daniel Williams in the steeplechase. Williams finished third with his time of 9:39.88. He finished just ahead of teammate Eric Brill who recorded a time of 9:49.72. Senior Paul Todd recorded a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-6.75. Senior Justin Connell cleared a height of 14-11.00 in the pole vault to finish second overall, just ahead of teammate Michael Ludlow. Senior DeVaughn Rettig recorded a mark of 47-3.75 to finish second in the triple jump and came right back on the field to finish third in the long jump with his mark of 22-7.00. Sophomore Kenneth McKinley was fourth in the shot put with his mark of 50-7.25, while teammate Darwin Johnson finished fourth in the discus (159-09).
Senior Blake Gordon recorded a NCAA regional qualifying mark in the discus throw with her mark of 157-10. Gordon finished second overall in the event. Senior Vicky Jannise set a school record in the steeplechase for a second consecutive week with her time of 11:28.60. Jannise finished third in the race, just three seconds ahead of teammate Katrina Storrs (11:31.84) who finished fifth in the steeplechase. Freshman Markeisha Edwards had a strong outing in the shot put, finishing third overall with her throw of 44-9.75. Junior Jocelyn Stevens finished third in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 14.63, just .12 seconds ahead of teammate Stevina Wyatt who finished fifth. Stevens also recorded a fifth-place finish in the high jump, when she cleared a height of 5-4.25. Wyatt recorded a time of 1:03.87 to finish third in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior Jennifer Schreiner finished in a two-way tie for second when she cleared a height of 11-11.75 in the pole vault.
SFA returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays. The four-day event will run through Saturday April 3rd.
