
Ladyjacks Defeat Sam Houston State

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team got 20 kills from junior Lauren Stevens as SFA rallied to beat Sam Houston State, 3-1 (28-30, 30-22, 30-24, 30-22) Saturday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 22-5 (.815) overall and 14-3 (.824) in Southland Conference play.
The Bearkats jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind some solid offense. SHSU recorded a .459 attack percentage in the first game to win by two points. The Bearkats' Chrissy Engle recorded eight kills in the first game to lead her squad.
But SFA didn't allow Sam Houston State to hold the momentum for very long as the Ladyjacks fought right back to tie the match at one. Senior Brittany Burton added 15 kills (.353 attack percentage) and six blocks to help tie the match at one sending into halftime.
SFA took its first lead of the game, winning game three, 30-24. Freshman Traci Rohde recorded 13 kills and three blocks, while senior Deborah Kirkham finished the night with seven kills.
The Ladyjacks fell behind, 4-0, in game three but battle back and eventually reclaimed the advantage. Sophomore Stephanie Figgers and Kirkham led a solid defensive performance by SFA as both players recorded 19 digs. Freshman JJ Jones led SFA all players with 61 assists.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State. The game against the Lady Demons is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
