BEAUMONT, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team came one step closer to advancing to the NCAA Championships with their 3-1 (30-21, 30-23, 32-34, 30-26) victory over McNeese State Saturday at the Montagne Center. The Ladyjacks are now 26-5 (.839) on the season.
Senior Brittany Burton had a huge night for SFA recording a match-high 25 kills. She also recorded seven blocks, as the Ladyjacks charged out to a 2-0 lead over the Cowgirls. Junior Amelia Mayeaux also added 16 kills (.323 attack percentage) as SFA took a commanding lead heading into halftime.
The Cowgirls didn't bow out quietly however, as they fought back to win a close game three, 34-32, behind Trisha Seale's 13 kills. Seale was one of four Cowgirls to record double-figure kills but it wasn't enough as SFA slammed the door on McNeese State in the fourth and final game, 30-26.
Sophomore Laura Cramer had a huge night for SFA recording 18 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Stephanie Figgers recorded a match-high 28 digs. Figgers was one of five Ladyjacks to record double-figure digs in the match. Freshman JJ Jones led all players with her 66 assists.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday when they will face No. 2 seed Texas State for the SLC Tournament title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. The match against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m., from the Montagne Center.
