
Ashley Monteau Named SLC Athlete of the Year

BEAUMONT - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's cross country teams were honored Monday afternoon for their strong performances at the 2004 Southland Conference Championships. The Lumberjacks won their fourth SLC title while the Ladyjacks just missed winning their third-straight conference crown, finishing second overall.
Sophomore Ashley Monteau was named SLC Female Athlete of the Year after winning the SLC individual title with a dominating time of 20:24.27. Monteau finished the race just shy of a minute faster than her nearest competitor. Savannah Matzinger and Amber Bagwell received All-SLC honors for their top-10 finishes.
Junior Julian Acuna led the Lumberjacks to their fourth-straight title, finishing second overall to earn All-SLC honor. Juniors Rodney Joseph, Chance Edwards and Marc Farris also earned all-conference honors for SFA.
SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling was also honored by the league, being named SLC Men's Coach of the Year. It is the second consecutive honor for Snelling, and his third overall.
The SFA cross country teams will return to action Saturday Nov. 13, when they travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the NCAA South Central Region Championships. The regional meet will take place at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
