
SFA Softball Inks Three

NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball coach Jennifer Poulsen has announced the signing of three student-athletes during the November early signing period. These additional signings bring to six the total number of student-athletes signed to national letters of intent by the SFA softball program this fall.
Benet Higgs of Antioch, Calif., Kaci Rutledge of Mesquite and Krystil Burney of Deer Park have signed letters of intent to play softball and continue their education at SFA next fall. All three are in their senior year of high school and will join the team following graduation.
Higgs is a three sport letterwinner at Deer Valley High School in Antioch, Calif, lettering in softball, soccer and tennis. An outfielder on the softball team, she was a first team All-League BVAL selection in 2004 and was also a second team All-East Bay team selection as a junior. She has also played centerfield for several summer league teams in California.
Rutledge has been a three year letterwinner at second base for coach Teresa Thibodeaux at Mesquite High School and has earned all-district honors each of the past two years. She led her district in stolen bases in 2004 and was the Mesquite High Outstanding Player of the Year as a junior. She was also the Offensive Player of the Year for Mesquite as a sophomore in 2003. She has compiled a .452 career batting average with a .679 slugging percentage. Rutledge is also 47-48 in stolen base attempts entering her senior season.
Burney has played both outfield and second base in her career and enters her senior year after lettering as a sophomore and junior at LaPorte High School. She has helped LaPorte High to three straight district titles and was voted the Offensive Player of the Year in 2003 and was a first team all-district selection in 2004 at second base.
SFA opens the season Feb. 4 at the University of South Carolina Gamecock Tournament. ™
