NATCHITOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team remained undefeated in Southland Conference play Sunday afternoon, as SFA shutout Northwestern State, 1-0, in overtime. The Ladyjacks are now 8-3-1 (.708) overall and a perfect 5-0-0 in the league.
The game shaped up as a defensive struggle early as both teams could muster only 14 shots in the first half. But both goalkeepers were up to the challenge as the Ladyjacks Natascia Michalezki recorded two saves in the first half. Michalezki held the game scoreless through regulation as the Ladyjacks headed to their fourth overtime game of the season.
Senior Lauren Matkin stepped up to play the role of hero as she netted the game winner at the 103:32 mark of the game. The goal was Matkin's first of the season. Michalezki recorded four saves in the shutout win.
"We were fortunate to get a win today," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. "Northwestern State deserves a lot of credit, they came out and fought hard. I'm proud of the effort our girls had in the second half. We got the job done we when we needed to."
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday when they travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on rival Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
