NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team heads into the stretch run of the season looking for their first Southland Conference title in six years. The Ladyjacks will take their league-leading 7-1-1 (.833) record on the road this week when they travel to Thibodaux, La., to face Nicholls State. The game against the Lady Colonels is slated to begin at 4 p.m. NSU is currently sixth in the conference with a 2-6-1 (.278) league record and only seven points. The Ladyjacks will be Hammond, La., on Sunday for a 2 p.m., showdown with Southeastern Louisiana. The Lady Lions are currently tied for fourth in the SLC with a 5-4-0 (.556) record and 15 points. The Ladyjacks are currently leading the conference with 22 points, one point ahead of Texas State.
A Brick Wall Junior goalkeeper Natascia Michalezki has proven that she is nothing short of a wall in front of the goal. She owns the school's single-game, single-season and all-time saves records. With her nine saves in the team's last two games, Michalezki became the first Ladyjack to record 400 saves in a career. Michalezki needs only 14 more saves to own the top three single-season saves marks in school history.
Player of the Week Senior Christie Mestayer became the fifth Ladyjack this season to receive a conference player of the week award. Mestayer earned the honor for her two goals (one game winning) and two assists last week against Louisiana-Monroe and Northwestern State. Mestayer currently leads the team with 26 points. She is also the team leader with eight assists. Three Ladyjacks are currently among the league's top five in scoring. Mestayer is second (1.67 points per game), sophomore Shahin Pabani is third (1.60) and senior Sophia Pantazis is fifth (1.33).
Up Next ... The Ladyjacks will return home to close out the season Friday Oct. 29, against McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the SFA Intramural Complex.
