NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team picked up its first Southland Conference victory of the season Saturday defeating Lamar, 3-2 (26-30, 26-30, 30-14, 33-31, 15-11). The Ladyjacks are now 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the Southland Conference.
Lamar took a 2-0 lead into halftime led by Jessica Johnson's team-high 21 kills and 16 digs. Lamar recorded a .387 attack percentage in the first two games and looked to be rolling to their first league victory of the season.
The Ladyjacks, trailing 2-0, made it obvious that they were not just going to roll over and surrender the victory to Lamar. The Ladyjacks put a 30-14 thumping on the Cardinals in the third game led by Junior Brittany Burton's 10 kills (.667 attack percentage). Burton finished the match with a career-high 26 kills and five blocks.
SFA kept the momentum in the second game as the Ladyjacks battled back for a 33-31 victory to force a fifth game. After swapping the first couple of points, the Ladyjacks took the lead and never looked back winning game five, 15-11.
Sophomore Lauren Stevens finished the match with 19 kills. Freshman Laura Cramer recorded a career-high 15 kills (.394 attack percentage) and four blocks. Classmate Stephanie Figgers finished the match with a career-high 25 digs, while Lauren Adams dished out a career-high 68 assists.
