NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team defeated Texas-El Paso, 3-2 in double overtime Friday night at the SFA Intramural Soccer Complex. The Ladyjacks are now 4-2-0 on the season and have won their last four games at home.
The Miners took an early 1-0 lead when Kaletia Roberts scored less than a minute into the game. But the Ladyjacks responded with 6:30 minutes later when Kendra Cannon netted her fourth goal of the season. The Ladyjacks took the lead when freshman Alicia Reese drilled a shot from 40-yards out. The Miners fought right back to tie the game at 2 less than four minutes later. The two teams went into halftime with the score all knotted up at 2.
In the second half it was a defensive struggle as neither team's goalkeeper allowed a ball to get by them. Sophomore Natascia Michalezki battled through an injury to set a school record with 24 saves. But after the first overtime the game was still tied at 2. But that all changed with Cannon netted her second goal of the night at the 103:17 mark for the game winner. Junior Sophia Pantazis was credited with the assists
"I'm very proud of team's effort," said SFA head coach Nicole Nelson. We didn't play our best game tonight but these girls never quit and find a way to win. Natascia was amazing tonight. She wasn't at 100 percent but played anyway and had a tremendous game. She is psychologically and physically the strongest goalkeeper I've ever coached."
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday to take on Texas Tech. The game against the Lady Raiders is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the SFA Intramural Complex.
