EL PASO, Texas - Only 24 hours after falling to Texas-El Paso, 3-1, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team returned the favor against the Miners by the same score Saturday morning. The Ladyjacks are now 1-2 (.333) on the season.
The Ladyjacks offense, which struggled in the first two matches, gave SFA an early 1-0 lead, winning game one, 30-22.The Ladyjacks were led by five players who recorded double-figure kills, including sophomore Amelia Mayeaux (League City, Texas) and junior Deborah Kirkham (Houston, Texas) who each recorded a team-high 15 kills. Kirkham was one of three Ladyjacks to record a double-double, adding 14 digs.
The Miners battled back to tie the match at one with their 30-22 victory in game two. UTEP was led by Nina Reeves who finished the match with 21 kills and 12 digs. But that is all the Ladyjacks would surrender as they won the final two games, 30-26, 30-25.
Senior Julie Goodson (Alvin, Texas) finished the match with 12 kills and only one attack error (.500 attack percentage). Juniors Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) and Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) each added 11 kills. Burton also recorded 15 digs and two blocks.
The Ladyjacks return to action Tuesday Sept. 2nd, when they travel to Houston, Texas to take on Rice. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
