NACOGDOCHES - Stephen F. Austin distance runners sophomore Ana Rodriguez (Dallas, Texas) and junior Justin Meier (Lorena, Texas) were named team MVPs Saturday afternoon announced SFA head coach Phil Olson.
Rodriguez was simply dominating in the 2002-03 season, running undefeated in all Southland Conference meets, winning five SLC individual titles and advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 meters. She was named the 2002 SLC Female Athlete of the Year after taking the league individual cross country title. She led Ladyjacks to the SLC team title in cross country and outdoor track and field. Rodriguez enters her junior season as a seven-time All-SLC athlete.
Meier was named the Lumberjacks team MVP after a season that saw him earn four All-SLC honors. Meier helped guide the SFA cross country team to its second consecutive SLC title with his seventh place finish. Meier will enter his senior season at SFA as a nine-time All-Southland Conference athlete and the defending league champion in the indoor 3,000 meters.
"Ana Rodriguez and Justin Meier did a wonderful job for our program not only during the indoor and outdoor season but also during the cross country as well," said Olson. "The exciting thing about Ana is that she didn't lose a conference race all year. That really says something about her ability, competitiveness and training. Justin had to battle through some injuries and illness this season but we were really excited with his indoor meet with an individual title and just continuing his excellence during the outdoor season."
