HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Donald Cole scored 15 points and Eddy Fobbs grabbed 11 rebounds as Sam Houston State beat Stephen F. Austin 69-62 on Saturday night, in Huntsville. The loss to the Bearkats leaves SFA one game back of Sam Houston heading down the stretch in the race for the SLC regular season title. The teams have spilt the season series with each winning on its home floor.
Mario Kinsey and Jason Stephenson both added 11 points for the Bearkats (19-5, 15-2, Southland).
Stevin Ozier and Marcus Clark led Stephen F. Austin (17-6, 13-3), each scoring 14 points.
SFA and Sam Houston traded baskets early in the contest before SFA went on a run to break open the game in the first half, building an 11-point lead midway through the first half. Sam Houston immediately responded with a run of its own to erase the deficit and build a two point lead at the half, 38-36.
The 'Jacks came out in the second half and built as much as a five point lead but could not shake the Bearkats as Sam Houston got a big second half performance from Marcus Ebow to help them build a lead of their own. SFA went cold in the final five minutes of the game and committed turnovers on three straight possessions that enable the Bearkats to build a 10 point lead and ease to the win.
Sam Houston was trailing in the second half before Stephenson hit a 3-pointer that tied the score at 53. The shot, with 8:10 left, began a 14-4 run that sealed the game for the Bearkats.
Antonio Burks scored 11 points for Stephen F. Austin.
