Track & Field Completes Day One at SLC Indoors

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field teams finished the first day of competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Friday. The Ladyjacks will enter day two with a 15-point advantage over second-place Southwest Texas, 50-35. The Lumberjacks are currently fifth with 23 points. The Ladyjacks recorded two individual titles and five All-SLC finishes in the first day, while Lumberjacks recorded one individual title and four all-conference finishes.
The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early lead due in large part to their dominance in the shot put. Destine Rawls won the individual title with her throw of 48-10. Rawls' marked just barely edged out teammate Blake Gordon who finished second with a throw of 47-2.50. Ana Rodriguez added 10 points when she won the women's 5,000 meters with her time of 17:33.63. Jocelyn Stevens earned all-conference honors when she cleared a height of 5-5 in the high jump to finish second. Senior Jessica Claiborne earned All-SLC honors in the long jump. Claiborne finished third with a mark of 19-3.50.
Nathan Flores led the Lumberjacks attack with his fifth-career individual title. The 2002 SLC Outdoor track athlete of the year won the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:49.88. The men's distance medley relay team Conference (Chance Edwards, DeVaughn Rettig, Mike Thompson and Bryan Williams) earned All-Southland honors when they crossed the finish line third with a time of 10:13.31. Rettig just missed all-conference honors with his fourth-place finish in the long jump. He recorded a jump of 23-9.50 to finish fourth.
The SFA men and women's track and field teams return to action Saturday with the men's shot put finals, which are slated to get underway at noon. The track events begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdle finals.
