HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team returned to its winning ways Sunday, knocking off Sam Houston State, 3-0. The Ladyjacks are now 12-4-2 on the season and 8-2-1 in Southland Conference play.
The game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes of action as the two teams could muster only 13 shots. The Ladyjacks outshot Sam Houston, 9-4, in the first half but the two goalkeepers were up to the task blocking every shot.
The game remained scoreless until the 63rd minute when freshman Shahin Pabani netted her fifth goal of the season. Junior Christie Mestayer was credited with the assist. The goal turned out to be the gamewinner as senior Heather Matchette would make it stand, recording four saves in 90 minutes of action for the shutout. Matchette improves her record to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomores Kim Gray and Kendra Cannon also added goals in the final 10 minutes of the game for SFA.
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday when they travel to Lake Charles, La., to face McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
