The hottest team in the Southland Conference continued to roll Friday night picking up their fifth consecutive win but it wasn't easy as SFA outlasted Northwestern State, 3-1 (30-25, 30-25, 26-30, 30-28). The Ladyjacks are now 11-11 (.500) overall and 7-4 (.636) in SLC play.
The Ladyjacks took the first two games behind strong defensive play and an opportunistic offense. Junior Brittany Burton led the charge with her team-high 21 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks. Sophomore Lauren Stevens added 13 kills as SFA went into the halftime with a 2-0 lead. But the Lady Demons didn't do down without a fight.
Northwestern State came out of the intermission with all the momentum as Priscilla Augusto rallied her team with 24 kills and 18 digs. Northwestern State won game three, 30-26.
SFA jumped out to a four-point lead in the fourth game, but the Lady Demons fought back to tie the game. Junior Deborah Kirkham recorded 11 kills and a team-high 17 digs as SFA fought to take a lead late in the game. The Ladyjacks were able to hold off another Northwestern State rally with sophomore Amelia Mayeaux's 11 kills and three blocks.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday to face Louisiana-Monroe. The match against the Lady Indians is slated to begin at 4 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
