NACOGDOCHES - Sophomore Lauren Stevens recorded 19 kills and three blocks as the Ladyjacks came from behind to defeat Texas-Arlington, 3-1 (24-30, 30-26, 30-24, 30-23), Tuesday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks improved their win streak to four consecutive with the victory and currently stand at 10-11 (.476) overall and 6-4 (.600) in the Southland Conference.
The Mavericks took command of the match early winning game one, 30-24. Caley Smith led the UTA attack with her 17 kills and 15 digs, while libero Ashley Smith recorded 28 digs to lead the Mavericks. But the Ladyjacks battled right back to win a hard-fought game two, 30-26. Junior Brittany Burton provided a spark for SFA with her 16 kills and match-high seven blocks.
The Ladyjacks held the momentum coming out of halftime winning game three, 30-24. Sophomore Amelia Mayeaux gave the Ladyjacks a lift with her 11 kills, seven digs and five blocks. The Mavericks tried to battle back in game four. UTA took an early lead but freshman Stephanie Figgers killed any ideas of a UTA comeback with her stellar defense. Figgers finished the match with a team-high 28 digs.
Junior Joanna Benestante added nine kills for SFA. The Ladyjacks employed both setters Tuesday night as senior Melissa Bullion led SFA with 30 assists, while freshman Lauren Adams added 26.
The Ladyjacks will look to move one step closer to the top of the SLC ladder Friday when they host Northwestern State. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
