Ladyjacks Sweep UCF Tournament SFA volleyball improves to .500 overall
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team improved to 3-3 on the season with its two victories at the Central Florida Tournament. The Ladyjacks outlasted Northeastern, 3-2, in the first match. SFA came right back in the evening match and knocked off tournament-host Central Florida, 3-2. The Ladyjacks are 3-3 overall.
The Ladyjacks opened the tournament against Northeastern and fell behind 2-0, but battled back riding the strong play of senior Jennifer Wilson (Friendswood, Texas) to victory. Wilson led all players with 27 kills on 49 attacks (.429 attack percentage). But Wilson wasn't the only offensive star for the Ladyjacks, classmate Angie Wood (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Brittany Burton (Livingston, Texas) each added 18 kills. Senior setter Sunni Williams (Houston, Texas) dished out 62 assists and added 22 digs.
It was more of the same in the second match, as Wilson connected for 20 kills against Central Florida. She finished the match with a .528 attack percentage. After falling behind 2-1, the Ladyjacks fought back to win the match in five as four players recorded double-figure kills. Burton had 16, sophomore Joanna Benestante (Houston, Texas) added 14 kills and Wood had 13. Sophomore Deborah Kirkham (Houston, Texas) led all players with her 19 digs.
"I'm proud of our team's performance," said SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys. "This was a long day playing back-to-back five-game matches. It's tough to come here on the road, but we played well. That first match we were down 2-0 and battle back to win. I thought we responded well in the second match to beat UCF. This was a great tournament for us."
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday, as they travel to Deland, Fla., to take on Stetson. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
