NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack track and field program closed out its 2002 recruiting class with the signing of javelin thrower Sarah Emerson (LaSalle, Ontario) Thursday, announced SFA head coach Phil Olson.
"She is the first pure javelin thrower we've had in since before I was here," said Olson. "The exciting thing about Sarah is she has only been throwing for a year and half so she is a relative newcomer to the sport. But based on her marks last year compared to the collegiate marks in the state of Texas, she would rank in the top five. Her most recent performance would have placed her among the top two throws in our conference from this past year."
Emerson competed at Sandwich Secondary School in LaSalle, Ontario, where she recorded a personal record of 144 feet in the javelin. That mark was good enough for a third-place finish at the Canadian Junior National Championships.
Emerson's signing closes out the 2002 SFA recruiting class and brings the total of incoming athletes to 22 for the 2002-03 season.
