Netters Open Season with a Double-Header Sweep SFA knocks off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American, 4-3
EDINBURG, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis teams kicked off the 2002 spring season Saturday with 4-3 victories over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American. The Ladyjacks are now 2-0 on the season.
SFA fell behind 3-0 to Copus Christi after losing the doubles point and at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. But the Ladyjacks fought back hard to win the final four singles matches. Junior Christine Huynh put the Ladyjacks on the scoreboard with her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jessica Martinez at No. 3 singles. Junior Sandra Wolfe and freshmen Robin Houston and Melissa Bass followed with back-to-back-to-back wins at Nos. 4-6 singles respectively to pull out the win.
The Ladyjacks went right back to work against Texas-Pan American. It was the Ladyjacks that jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in this match by winning two of the three doubles matches. But the match was tied at three after five of the six singles matches. Freshman Emily Voss came through in the clutch for SFA at No. 3 singles, pulling out the three-set victory and giving the Ladyjacks a 4-3 win.
"Everyone played well," said SFA head coach Bret Arrant. "In the first match we played great singles pulling out victories at Nos. 3-6 singles. Against UTPA, we switched up our doubles teams a little and it paid off for us. I felt Robin (Houston) played well against UTPA picking up wins in both her singles and doubles match. Voss did a great job to pull out the three-set win to clinch the victory for us."
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday Feb. 23 at Rice. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., in Houston, Texas.
