NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack track and field team signed Markeisha Edwards (Stephenville, Texas), Julie Kole (Pearland, Texas) and LaKoa McKeever (Houston, Texas) to National Letters of Intent announced SFA head coach Phil Olson Tuesday.
"We really like this class," said Olson. "These are great kids who all had great visits. We are excited about the quality of individuals that we have added to our team. They are really going to help this team."
Edwards comes to Nacogdoches from a very strong Stephenville program coached by Sean Lonergan, father of current Ladyjack athletes Katie and Colleen Lonergan. Edwards is one of the top returning shot putters in the state and is considered and up and coming discus thrower. Edwards has recorded a toss of 44-1 in the shot put.
"Markeisha will help us in the discus, hammer and the shot put," said Olson. "She is one best shot putters in the state of Texas. I can see her developing into a national class thrower within the next two years."
Kole is a distance runner that has recorded a time of 2:18 in the 800 meters. She has posted a two-mile time of 11:56 at the McNeil state cross country course.
"Julie is a very talented athlete with great range," said SFA distance coach Alex Gibby. "She'll cover everything from the 800 meters to the 5,000 meters, in addition to cross country. I'm excited to see how she will progress over the next four to five years of her career."
McKeever comes to Nacogdoches from Houston's Alief Elsik High School, where she finished 13th at the Region 3-5A cross country championships. She has posted times of 2:17 in the 800 meters, 5:10 in the 1,600 meters and 11:20 in the 3,200 meters.
"LaKoa is an extremely versatile athlete who will compete in a range of events for us. She is one of the most talented distance runners we've attracted here at SFA. She comes from a great high school program and we are excited to have her. Both LaKoa and Julie add an element of leg speed we haven't had here in the past."
