
'Jacks Set To Open Conference Play Saturday In Monroe

Southland Conference action opens for bot the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks Saturday evening in Monroe, La. as SFA takes on the Indians. The Ladyjacks will play game one of the Southland Conference doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m., with the Lumberjacks to follow in a scheduled 7:30 p.m. tip.
The 'Jacks enter conference play with a 4-3 mark overall and hope to get off on the right foot with a win in Monroe. SFA is 2-8 in its last 10 trips to Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The 'Jacks lost an overtime game, 68-62, to close out the 2000-01 season, and dropped an 85-72 decision to the Indians, in Monroe, a year ago.
UL-M enters the game with a 2-5 mark on the season, and has dropped two straight including a 107-66 loss to Texas A&M the last time out. The Indians are led by F Kirby Lemons who is averaging 17.1 ppg and 11.1 rpg. Lemons is one of two Indians averaging double figures in scoring with Reggie Griffin adding 10.3 ppg for coach Mike Vining.
The 'Jacks continue to display a balanced attack with only two players averaging more than 10 points per night. F Antonio Burks leads the team with his 12.7 ppg average off the bench, while C Percy Green is adding 12.0 ppg in his starting role. There are currently nine members of the team averaging at least six points per game. The 'Jacks enter conference play as the SLC's top scoring offense and toughest team to rebound against. SFA also leads the SLC in field goal percentage, connecting on 53 percent of its field goal attempts.
Following Saturday's game in Monroe, SFA returns home for a conference doubleheader with Southwest Texas. The Ladyjacks play the early game at 6:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 8:15 p.m. Monday night in the coliseum.
